Thaipusam is a key Hindu ceremony that is held each year during the full moon in the tenth month of the Hindu calendar – falling from mid-January to mid-February in the Gregorian calendar. It is marked in Malaysia by a public holiday.
Thaipusam traditionally falls on a full moon. The celebration is held as a tribute to the Hindu god of war, Lord Murugan, honoured in sacred lore for slaying three evil demons in the name of good virtue.
CHRISTMAS DAY & HOLIDAY – 25th & 27th DECEMBER 2020
Christmas is a Christian festival celebrating the birth of Jesus. Christians in Malaysia celebrate Christmas by way of meals with family and friends on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day, along with gift-giving, music, singing, church events and prayer.
More broadly, Malaysian society celebrates Christmas with colourful displays in shopping malls for one or two months before Christmas Day and with a public holiday on the 25th & 27th December.
SULTAN OF SELANGOR’S BIRTHDAY – 11th DECEMBER 2020
Sultan Sharafuddin is the current monarch and the ninth consecutive sultan of the Bugis Dynasty to reign over Selangor. The dynasty dates back to 1745 and is believed to have originated from Sulawesi in modern-day Indonesia.
DEEPAVALI DAY – 14th NOVEMBER 2020
The date of Deepavali is determined by the Hindu lunar calendar, and so its date on the Gregorian calendar varies from year to year.
Deepavali festival is a major holiday in parts of Malaysia, mostly among Hindus, and it is a time when Hindus invite those of other religions into their homes to see how they celebrate what, to them, is the most important day on the calendar.
HOLLOWEEN DAY – 31st OCTOBER 2020
Halloween, contraction of All Hallows’ Eve, a holiday observed on October 31, the evening before All Saints’ (or All Hallows’) Day. The celebration marks the day before the Western Christian feast of All Saints and initiates the season of Allhallowtide, which lasts three days and concludes with All Souls’ Day.
